Day 25 – Saddest Anime Death

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 25 – Only 5 more days to go after this!

So if Ushio from Clannad : After Story actually died, she would have taken this spot but because she didn’t I need to think of someone else. Those of you who have read some of my other posts might be saying this is an obvious one, Spike Spiegel in Cowboy Bebop. But those people would be wrong. Spike’s death scene is the coolest moment in Anime history but it wasn’t particularly sad. Spike Spiegel was still living in the past and was unable to live in the present. In the show it was referenced as him living in a “dream” that he was unable to escape from. At the end of the show he was able to die to Vicious finally ending his dream. I believe it would have been more sad for him to live his life in a nonchalant way only truly living when he fought. Oh wait I still have to talk about the actual saddest death scene… I will leave this analysis for later at some point.

squealer

After much deliberation and use of my Cantus to divine the true saddest death in anime, I have come to the conclusion that it is Squealer’s death in Shinsekai Yori (From the New World). Being a part of the oppressed race of Queerats, all he wanted to do was to boost his people up so they can stop being enslaved by the humans. I sympathized with him more than any other character in the show and wanted him to succeed, yet I knew that he wouldn’t. Though his cause might have been noble, his methods were not. He lied and cheated to gain the trust of humans and betrayed them by killing two parents and taking their child to be used as a weapon. But in the end that weapon was stopped by the Queerats he was trying to help advance, by the one rule he imposed on the weapon to protect the Queerats. A sad way for his plan to fail, followed by a sad death where his goals were never reached.

By the way for those who missed it, Squealer’s name in this show was a reference to Sqealer in Animal Farm written by George Orwell. George Orwell also wrote a book 1984 which displays a dystopia similar to the one shown in this anime. Oh and I also wrote a review for this show here.

  1. ShinSekai was a pretty underrated anime as it showed a society that was destroyed, rebuild yet primitive at its core. For the low budget it had, the performance was pretty decent and the message was strong.

    • I agree! Its hard to discuss this show with others because so few have watched it, which is a shame. Though it is not quite as powerful as what hundreds of years of literature have turned out in Brave New World and other dystopian pieces, it definitely deserves more attention than it has.
