30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 18
Though some female supporting anime characters have the same problems as male ones I think I am more forgiving on them because they are cuter. All flaws can be ignored if I enjoy the character design enough.
In most anime these female characters can be separated into different tropes such as Kuudere, Tsundere, Yandere, etc. Most of them include the word dere which is cute in Japanese. Of these tropes my favorite is the Kuudere’s which means they are cold, blunt and cynical on the outside but compassionate on the inside. Sometimes they can also be portrayed as just plain emotionless and silent, such as Rei Ayanami in the Evangelion franchise. My favorite supporting female anime character is of the latter category and resides within The Melancholy of Haruhi Suzumiya as the resident alien.
If you have seen the show then you obviously know I am talking about Yuki Nagato. Haruhi was one of those shows that really opened up the gate to anime for me. Before this show I only watched anime whenever I could stay up late and check out Toonami. Haruhi’s ingenuity came from how it japed on the slice of life genre. In other slice of life shows they would be doing generic school things as if the fate of the world rested on their ability to succeed, while in Haruhi the fate of the world was actually at stake. I always found that joke hilarious and everyone seems to miss it.
Anyways Yuki Nagato was my favorite character from that franchise because of the Disappearance of Haruhi Suzumiya movie. It is one of my favorite movies of all time because of how it portrayed winter, and its ability to show Yuki’s emotions during the Endless Eight. There are other things I love about this movie, but I will save it for another time and leave you with an adorable picture of Yuki Nagato as an evil, bass guitar wielding witch.
