Day 9 – Best Anime Villain

30 Day Anime Challenge – Day 9

This was really a tough decision for me. Anime lacks robust villains that are intriguing yet vile. Western entertainment is much better at this with memorable examples like, the Joker from Batman, and Darth Vader from Star Wars. But when you think of anime villains, what comes to mind? Nothing in particular for me.

So the soul searching began and here is what I came up with. The best anime villain is Envy from Full Metal Alchemist: Brotherhood. Perhaps the most vicious of all the homunculi, but like his name suggests he is envious of humankind. Envious of their relationships that power Ed, and Al’s inner strength. I chose Envy over the other homunculi of the Full Metal Alchemist series because of his conflicting emotions that bring depth to his character. There is a conflict about everything within himself even his gender, which is shown through his questionable normal form.

Even with Envy’s stellar performance as a villain I still feel like Anime has a  long way to go to match up.

    • I did not particularly pick Envy because of his actual physical prowess but rather what anime villains could be. To me the other homunculi were quite one dimensional with maybe the exception of Greed who embraced his inhumanity. Envy’s was contemptible and cruel, but out of all the homunculi he was the one who wanted most to be human. And through his end in Brotherhood I empathized with him/her, and it provoked a thought in how I treat people who lash out due to jealousy. A villain should definitely be in the wrong, but always should bring a new perspective to the viewer.
